We’ll hike along the trails, learn more about bird watching, and go fishing! Details We’ll start at Kettle Point visitor center where we’ll learn more about the species of animals in this area. Then we’ll hike the nearby trails and look for various species of birds. After a picnic lunch, we’ll head across the street to Ninigret Pond to saltwater fish or shelfish. Fishing details Fishing on Ninigret Pond, the largest coastal salt pond in Rhode Island is a spectacular treat not only because of the fish available, but also because of the expansive vistas and gorgeous sunsets. Anglers may saltwater fish from the refuge shoreline in accordance with State regulations. In additions, anglers may saltwater fish and shellfish in Ninigret Pond from the refuge shoreline from legal sunrise to legal sunset, and in accordance with State regulations. Each spring the refuge partners with the State to host an annual fly-tying workshop (held at the classroom at Kettle Pond Visitor Center) coupled with fishing in a cove along the trail to Grassy Point at the East entrance. The Trailman should be able to detect injuries and be able to treat simple ones. During the meetings, Trail Guides will teach the Trailmen about first aid and why it is considered “first.” This training will include learning how to treat various injuries such as bleeding, fractures, sprains, bug bites or stings, and a foreign body. Most importantly, the Trailmen will learn when they need to call 911. After the Troop meeting, there will be a brief parent meeting for those going on the spring campout.
